Monitoring Wildlife Crossing Structures

The British Columbia Ministry of Transportation and Transit (MOTT) promotes human safety through building and monitoring structures that enable wildlife to safely cross highways. In turn, these structures support wildlife movement and population connectivity. MOTT has multiple projects focused on understanding the use and efficacy of wildlife crossing structures. Structures include over- and underpasses, moving wildlife above or below the roadway, accompanied by fencing to guide animals towards the crossings. Within the fencing, there are structures such as one-way gates to help animals escape the road corridor. MOTT has installed remote cameras at wildlife crossing structures throughout BC and resulting image sets are being processed by SENSR. The camera data helps MOTT identify needed improvements to structure specifications to promote wildlife passage and reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions.
